1. Honest Questions and Dialogue with God
Habakkuk opens the book by honestly questioning God about the violence and injustice he sees in Judah. He boldly brings his confusion and frustration to God, showing that it’s okay to bring doubts and questions to the Lord.
2. God’s Justice May Not Be Immediate, But It Is Certain
God responds to Habakkuk by revealing that He will use the Babylonians to bring judgment on Judah for its sins, but He will also later judge Babylon. God’s justice may seem delayed, but it will surely come (Habakkuk 2:3).
3. The Just Shall Live by Faith
One of the most famous verses in the book, Habakkuk 2:4, proclaims: “But the righteous person will live by his faithfulness (or faith).” Even when circumstances are confusing, trust and faith in God are essential.
4. Woes to the Wicked
God pronounces a series of “woes” against those who exploit others, use violence, practice idolatry, and build their lives on injustice. He warns that their actions will lead to ruin and disgrace (Habakkuk 2:6-20).
5. A Prayer of Praise and Trust
The book ends with Habakkuk’s prayer, praising God’s power and faithfulness. Even when facing hardship and lack, the prophet declares he will rejoice in God and trust Him no matter what (Habakkuk 3:17-19).
